I have been teaching yoga in the Oxford area since 2011. It’s been a lifetime passion - I went to my first ever class in 1972 and have been hooked on yoga ever since. I’ve found it very complementary to sport, and is now enabling me to continue to remain active as I move into my ‘golden’ years.
My style is rooted in the hatha tradition (as opposed to the faster paced ‘Vinyasa Flow’ which has become very popular in the last decade). There is no pressure in my classes to push yourself into doing strong postures. There is no such thing as ‘I can’t do yoga’. Rather yoga is for you, to listen to your body and practise at level that is right for you.
My teaching is based on my own experience. Unlike many other yoga teachers, I didn’t begin with a flexible body, and had a tendency towards tight muscles and lower back pain in my twenties. By practising yoga, I remember reaching my toes for the first time! And gradually, with patience, I have been able to ‘let go’. I think my own experiences enable me to understand what it is like to feel stiff, creaky or have some kind of injury that prevents a full range of movement.
Training
My practice and teaching continue to evolve and change, taking on board new ideas and scientific understandings. Back in the early 2000s, It wasn’t teaching, but an interest in finding out more about the philosophical side of yoga that led me to take a Foundation course with Michael Hutchinson, accredited by the British Wheel of Yoga. In 2009, I embarked on teacher training with Camyoga, at Yoga Alliance 200 level. Anna Heavens, a senior Iyengar teacher in the Oxford/Abingdon area, was a big influence. I have also completed a two year training course in yoga therapy at the Devon School of Yoga, learning how it can be used to help people individually with their health issues. Latterly I have been following the Australian teacher Donna Farhi.
Before yoga, my main career was in journalism. I ran the Artweeks festival in Oxfordshire for three years, and I currently enjoy painting and printmaking in my spare time.
